Analyzing the Effects of Spoken Dialog Systems on Driving Behavior

چکیده
This paper presents an evaluation of a spoken dialog system for automotive environments. Our overall goal was to measure the impact of user-system interaction on the user’s driving performance, and to determine whether adding context-awareness to the dialog system might reduce the degree of user distraction during driving. To address this issue, we incorporated context-awareness into a spoken dialog system, and implemented three system features using user context, network context and dialog context. A series of experiments were conducted under three different configurations: driving without a dialog system, driving while using a context-aware dialog system, and driving while using a context-unaware dialog system. We measured the differences between the three configurations by comparing the average car speed, the frequency of speed changes and the angle between the car’s direction and the centerline on the road. These results indicate that context-awareness could reduce the degree of user distraction when using a dialog system during

On the feasibility of using pupil diameter to estimate cognitive load changes for in-vehicle spoken dialogues
In a driving simulator study, we explore the feasibility of using pupil diameter to estimate how the cognitive load of the driver changes during a spoken dialogue with a remote conversant. We confirm that it is feasible to use pupil diameter to differentiate between parts of the dialogue that increase the cognitive load of the driver, and those that decrease it. Our long term goal is to build a...
متن کاملSpoken Variable Initiative Dialog: An Adaptable Interface
Recent advances in speech recognition technology have raised hopes about the development of practical spoken natural language interfaces. Embedding the speech recognition technology within a sophisticated dialog processing mechanism can overcome many of the traditional problems in spoken natural language systems. This paper presents a theory of natural language dialog that enables: (1) robust b...
متن کاملIn-Car Multi-Domain Spoken Dialogs: A Wizard of Oz Study
Mobile Internet access via smartphones puts demands on in-car infotainment systems, as more and more drivers like to access the Internet while driving. Spoken dialog systems support the user by less distracting interaction than visual/hapticbased dialog systems. To develop an intuitive and usable spoken dialog system, an extensive analysis of the interaction concept is necessary. We conducted a...
متن کاملCIAIR In-Car Speech Corpus - Influence of Driving Status
CIAIR, Nagoya University, has been compiling an in-car speech database since 1999. This paper discusses the basic information contained in this database and an analysis on the effects of driving status based on the database. We have developed a system called the Data Collection Vehicle (DCV), which supports synchronous recording of multichannel audio data from 12 microphones which can be placed...
متن کاملOut-of-Domain Spoken Dialogs in the Car: A WoZ Study
Mobile Internet access via smartphones puts demands on in-car infotainment systems, as more and more drivers like to access the Internet while driving. Spoken dialog systems (SDS) distract drivers less than visual/haptic-based dialog systems. However, in conversational SDSs drivers might speak utterances which are not in the domain of the SDS and thus cannot be understood. In a Wizard of Oz stu...
